Bilder vom und gegen den Krieg

Die einen in «Coca: Die Taube aus Tschetschenien» erzählen von ihren spurlos verschwundenen Gatten. Die anderen berichten von den verstümmelten Leichen ihrer Söhne, die sie in ihren Gärten fanden, und von den Kindern, welche den Ermordungen ihrer Eltern zusahen.

Der eindrücklichste Bericht in diesem aufwühlenden Dokumentarfilm vom Schweizer Eric Bergkraut aber stammt aus dem Mund der Titelheldin Sainap Gaschaiewa, genannt Coca, die erzählt, wie sie einmal die Erschiessung eines etwa 19-jährigen Jungen filmte.

Als sie mit der Kamera näher ging, meint Gaschaiewa, habe sie gemerkt, dass er noch lebte. Blaue Augen, blütenweisser Körper, habe er unter ihren Augen seinen letzten Atemzug getan - sie aber müsse nun mit dieser Erinnerung an sein Sterben weiterleben.

Erschütternd und hoch politisch ist Eric Bergkrauts Film. Er verwebt Interviews und Aufnahmen mit den Videos und Fotos, die seine Protagonistinnen im Laufe der letzten zehn Jahre in ihrer Heimat heimlich - und oft unter Bedrohung des eigenen Lebens - drehten, und zeugt dabei in fiebriger Dringlichkeit von einem Krieg und einem Völkermord, an denen das offizielle Europa indifferent schweigend seine Mitschuld trägt. Die Preisübergabe findet im Köln am 20. November 2005 statt und wird vom Sender Phönix direkt übertragen. Mehr Details dazu später an dieser Stelle.

Montreal, Bratislava

Coca wurde an das Festival international des Films du Monde in Montreal eingealden. Es findet vom 26.8-5.9 statt.

Im November ist Coca mit slowakischer Untertiteung in Bratislava zu sehen. Der Film wurde vom 9.-13.11 zum One World Film Festival eingeladen. Sainap Gaschaiewa und Eric Bergkraut werden anwesend sein.

Premiere Deutschland

Die Vorpremiere Deutschland findet am Freitag, den 18. November 2005 im Filmhaus in Köln statt. Sie wird von einer Debatte begleitet, die von Klaus Bednarz animiert wird, Sainap Gaschaiewa und Eric Bergkraut sind anwesend. Der reguläre Filmstart erfolgt am 24. November.

Am Donnerstag, dem 2.6 startet "Coca" in Zürich im Arthouse MOVIE 1 täglich um 18.30 Uhr und am Sonntag jeweils als Matinee um 13.00 Uhr. Ebenfalls am 2.6 startet der Film in Winterthur im Kino LOGE.

In der ersten Juni-Hälfte läuft der Film in Basel an und vom 14.-27. Juli ist er in Luzern im STATTKINO programmiert.

Oslo

Noch eine Festival-Einladung: "Coca" wurde für das Internationale Filmfestival von Oslo nominiert, das vom 17.-27. November 2005 stattfindet. Norwegen ist damit das neunte Land, in dem der Film gezeigt wird.

Die nächsten Einladungen zu Festivals stammen aus Göteborg (Januar), Teheran (Januar) und Kiev (April).

Brisbane

THE FEST THAT WAS

We Look Back on BIFF presented by Vision 2005...

2005 was a transition year for the 14 year old Festival, marked by the decision to move the primary venue to South Bank and the introduction of Cine Sparks, the Australian Film Festival for Young People. Change is always a challenge and we anticipated that the Festival would be more challenging to stage in 2005 than in previous years.

One challenge we could never have foreseen was the loss of our Chief Technical Consultant, Geoff Bielefeld, who died suddenly the weekend before the Festival. Geoff has been with the Festival since the beginning. His loss was keenly felt at a personal level by the ‘old-timers’ at BIFF, and his expertise was and will be sorely missed. Geoff was a keen opera fan, and we were pleased to dedicate the Opening Night screening of U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, an adaptation of Bizet’s Carmen, to his memory.

The Venue Change

The historic Regent Cinemas have been home to the Festival since its third year and for many people the Festival and the Regent are intrinsically linked. But redevelopments to surrounding buildings, the Queen Street Mall and the cinemas themselves, along with the growth of the Festival, had increasingly impacted on the suitability of the venue for staging the event. If there was any doubt, unresolvable air-conditioning problems in the building during the Festival brought home the realities.

The move to South Bank created new challenges for the team, especially without Geoff to help the South Bank projection team learn the ropes of projection for a festival audience. Behind-the-scenes problems with the ticketing system created initial dramas at the South Bank Box Office but by day five even these appeared to have settled down. The front-of-house staff were full of praise for the venue, noting that it was much easier to move large crowds in and out. Another bonus from a staff point-of-view was the capacity to accommodate larger audiences for video and DVD content: in previous years the State Library Theatrette was the only venue for this content and was limited to 100 seats.

We’ll be keenly watching the results of the Festival survey to find out what the audience thinks: from anecdotal evidence so far, overall people seem more concerned about the challenge of moving between venues than about the choice of one venue over another!

Cine Sparks Highlights

In its first year as a film festival dedicated to young people, Cine Sparks evoked laughter, tears, opinions, dancing, music, and various other forms of creative expression from today’s youth.

Students travelled from as close as Brisbane State High School and Somerville House (both located in South Brisbane) and from as far as Toowoomba and Stanthorpe to participate in free film screenings and heavily-subsidised workshops.

The events on the second Family Fun Day (held last Sunday) drew all ages to the Suncorp Piazza for an all-day line-up of free film screenings and live, interactive events. Particularly popular were the screening of the 1980s classic Neverending Story and the Bollywood Dreams Dance Extravaganza. Professional Bollywood dancers in colourful Indian dress demonstrated and instructed the eager crowd in Bollywood-style dancing long after dusk.

Cine Sparks came to an end for 2005 with two of the schools who attended on the last day viewing back-to-back screenings of The Color of Milk (Norway/Sweden) and 4th Floor (Spain).

4th Floor joins Machuca and The Mighty Celt on the Festival’s Showtime Top Ten list. Congratulations also to each of the four shorts in the Cine Sparks programme, which made it in to the Merchant Solutions Top Ten: Bloody Footy, The Djarn Djarns, Lesson from Bam, and Little Witches.

The Cine Sparks Workshops programme presented by Network Ten wrapped up at the end of last week, with students creating their own mobile soapies and mobile movies in back-to-back workshops last Friday. And budding filmmakers took part in a free Video Production Workshop on Sunday, where participants were equipped with skills to take them from pre-production right through to post-production.

The Guests

International guests this year travelled from as far afield as Israel, Russia, Argentina, India and Austria and we were pleased to host them all! Being a small Festival by international standards, BIFF tries to differentiate itself by being hospitable to guests. As well as hospitality at the Festival, we assisted them to organise whale-watching tours and visits to Lone Pine to cuddle koalas and feed kangaroos. Alireza Ghanie, director of Lesson from Bam, brought all this into perspective with his revelation that at some festivals, guests have to have bodyguards from the special police!

Curators Jack Sargeant and Mark Webber, both of whom have attended the Festival before, demonstrated the effects of our hospitality, using their visit to renew Brisbane friendships formed during their last visit.

Kais Nashef, star of Paradise Now, charmed everyone with his ‘Welcome Back Kotter’ looks and his willingness to work moments after getting off a 30 hour flight. Shin Jane, director of Shin-Sung-il is Lost, won our sympathy when she learned she faced 18 hours in transit on her way home due to an airport strike in Korea. Pearse Elliott, director of The Mighty Celt, proved to be the most dedicated party-animal.

Guests V. C. Harris (Malayalam Retrospective) and Sülbiye V. Günar (Karamuk) both celebrated their birthdays while at the Festival, and T. V. Chandran (director of Lesson One: A Wail) celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary…although his wife wasn’t here to celebrate with him!

Australian guests may not have to travel so far, but we appreciate their efforts no less. We were particularly impressed by the efforts some of the domestic filmmakers made to promote their own films. The Puppy team threw their own after-party at The Press Club and were lucky enough for the event to coincide with a gig by one of the bands who supplied music for the soundtrack.

Our jury members worked hard for the hospitality they received. We were delighted when Interfaith Jury announced they were awarding Mysterious Skin the award for promotion of humanitarian values: in the wake of the controversy over the film, their decision affirmed Anne and Gary’s decision to programme the film. Indu Shrikent took up her duties as a jury member just days after the Festival she co-directs closed, but maintained good humour throughout the punishing schedule. We were very honoured this year that Klaus Eder, the general secretary of FIPRESCI since 1986, agreed to attend the Festival and chair the FIPRESCI Jury here as it speaks volumes for the regard in which we are held internationally.

Of course, the ‘guest of honour’ is always our esteemed Chauvel Award recipient. This year it was David Bradbury, and he and his family proved to be delightful guests. David didn’t miss an opportunity to promote his cause: the Lord Mayor will be receiving a personal copy of Blowin’ in the Wind from David as he continues to try and raise awareness of the issues involved.

As well as filmmaker guests, the Fest was attended by representatives of distribution companies and the media. Michael Franti’s management sent a rep to see how the film was received here, and were thrilled with the reception. They’ll be sending the comments recorded by patrons in the guest book back to Michael Franti. By the way, they told us he’s likely to tour here around February next year.

We’d like to extend hearfelt thanks to all our guests for their priceless contribution to this year’s Fest!

The Films

With more than 150 feature films screening this year, we can’t mention every session, but here’s a few stand-out moments.

Up and Down – for the strange thrill of seeing Brisbane depicted as a Utopian idyll.

Blacktown and Coca: The Dove of Chechnya – for eliciting some of the most emotional audience responses we can remember seeing after a screening.

First screening of I am a Sex Addict – for one of the most fascinating Q&A sessions we can recall.

Peep ‘TV’ Show – for providing us with some of the most visually striking guests we’ve ever had. Pictured left are director Yutaka Tsuchiya and his wife (and star of the film) Shiori Gechov.

Nitaboh – for creating such demand we had to move it to a bigger cinema.

The short film Boris – Just for the laughs.

Phil the Alien – for finally making it onto our screens!

We had a number of sell-out sessions this year, including Magnifico, I Told You I was Ill: Spike Milligan, Mosaic, Dumplings, I Know I’m Not Alone, Kept and Dreamless, Nitaboh, Moolaadé, The Taste of Tea and Malabar Princess.

We extend sincere thanks to the distributors and filmmakers who made it possible for us to provide such a diverse and interesting selection of films.

And a final round of applause for you, our patrons. We know some of you had your patience tested this year with ticketing issues, hot cinemas at the Regent and some projection problems – we appreciate your good humour and perserverance in the face of difficulties. The most popular films at the Fest are determined by audience vote. Only contemporary titles are included in the listing of most popular films, although we do use your feedback on retrospective titles for our own purposes.

Competition for places in the top ten is very hot: a very small number of votes can make all the difference to a film’s fortunes.

Tschetschenien Russland hat still und heimlich die Truppenzahl auf 80 000 erhöht

Im Konferenzraum stehen zwei Fahnen, die russische und die tschetschenische. Sie haben sie eigens für das Interview hereingetragen. Es sind die Insignien der Macht des Ramsan Kadyrow. Er ist erst 28 Jahre alt, aber als Vize-Regierungschef der starke Mann in Grosny. Er gebietet über eine Soldateska von mehreren tausend Mann. Menschenrechtler legen ihm und seinen Schergen unzählige Morde und Entführungen zur Last. Sie werden auch im Zusammenhang mit dem Tod Aslan Maschadows genannt, des einzigen Präsidenten, den die Tschetschenen seit der russischen Kolonialisierung selbst wählen durften.

Kadyrow sagt über Maschadows Tod: «Für uns Tschetschenen macht es schon lange keinen Unterschied, ob Maschadow nun lebt oder tot ist.» Das ist auch die offizielle Linie Moskaus. Für Chawe Chirsrjewa aus Petropa-lowskaja macht es jedoch einen Unterschied. Als sie vom Tod Maschadows erfahren habe, habe sie geweint, sagt sie. Die Mutter von sieben Kindern, deren Mann vor einem Jahr spurlos verschwunden ist, ist kein Einzelfall. Viele Tschetschenen sind bestürzt über den Tod des Präsidenten, der im März bei einer mysteriösen Vernichtungsaktion in dem Dorf Tolstoi-Yurt getötet wurde. Er verkörperte für das Volk Selbstachtung und Würde. Sein würdeloser Tod hat die Menschen verletzt.

Laut offizieller Darstellung hatte der Separatistenchef im Hause eines entfernten Verwandten in Tolstoi-Yurt Unterschlupf gesucht, bevor ihn im März eine russische Spezialeinheit beseitigte. Die amtlichen Erklärungen unmittelbar danach strotzten allerdings von Widersprüchen. Eine andere Version besagt, Maschadow sei von Kadyrows Leuten ermordet und erst später nach Tolstoi-Yurt geschafft worden. Aus Angst vor Rache der Rebellen habe der Vizepremier die Russen gebeten, den Mord auf ihre Kappe zu nehmen.

Die Einwohner haben Angst. Kaum jemand ist bereit zu erzählen, was er an jenem Tag erlebt hat. Für das Dorf, das bisher vom Krieg verschont blieb, kam die Aktion überraschend. Tolstoi-Yurt versagte im Unabhängigkeitskrieg vor zehn Jahren dem Separatistenführer die Gefolgschaft und gilt als Hochburg der Moskautreuen. Warum sollte sich der ehemalige Präsident ausgerechnet in der Höhle des Löwen verschanzen? Raman Bolathijew, der Imam des Dorfes, glaubt nicht an die Version, die ihnen aufgetischt wurde. Er habe viele Leichen gesehen, sagt der 79-Jährige: «Der Maschadow, dessen Leiche sie im Fernsehen zeigten, war schon einige Tage tot.»

Verschwunden ist seither Musa Yussupow, der den Flüchtigen in seinem Haus versteckt haben soll. Die Rebellen behaupten, die geschundene Leiche sei Tage später gefunden worden. Tschetscheniens Innenministerium und die Polizei dementieren, ohne etwas über den Verbleib Yussupows angeben zu können. Auch die Familie wartet vergeblich auf ein Lebenszeichen.

Aus Angst vor Repressalien verzichteten die Yussupows darauf, Vermisstenanzeige zu erstatten. Das sei kein Einzelfall mehr, stellten die Menschenrechtsorganisationen Memorial und Human Rights Watch fest. Wer Entführungen meldet, muss damit rechnen, selbst abgeholt zu werden. «Aus Angst, sie könnten auch die beiden anderen Söhne holen, habe ich nichts unternommen», meinte eine Mutter zu Human Rights Watch, die anonym bleiben wollte. Immer häufiger weigern sich Angehörige, mit Menschenrechtlern zusammenzuarbeiten.

Im Januar räumte der Sekretär des tschetschenischen Sicherheitsrates, Rudnik Dudajew, ein, dass Entführungen ein bislang ungekanntes Ausmass erreicht hätten. Rund 500 Leute seien 2004 verschwunden. Was steckt hinter dieser Offenheit? Zynismus oder Ratlosigkeit? Dafür, dass die Todesschwadronen Ramsan Kadyrows für die Verbrechen verantwortlich sind - nicht selten im Zusammenspiel mit russischen Sicherheitsorganen -, gibt es inzwischen erdrückende Beweise.

Auch Frauen und Minderjährige werden immer häufiger entführt, seit tschetschenische Selbstmordattentäterinnen Terroranschläge verüben. Über 1800 Entführungsfälle seit Kriegsbeginn 1999 gab auch der Vorsitzende des tschetschenischen Staatsrates, Taus Dschabrailow, zu. Ermittlungen wurden in 1814 Fällen eingeleitet, ohne dass je ein Täter bestraft worden wäre. Angst und Terror sind allgegenwärtig, schlimmer als zu Kriegszeiten. Viele fürchten daher, der Terrorist Schamil Bassajew werde neuen Zulauf erhalten. Er kündigte auf einer Internet-Seite der Rebellen an, er sehe sich nach dem Tod Maschadows nicht mehr zu Zurückhaltung verpflichtet.

Die russischen Sicherheitskräfte haben die Truppenstärke um 5000 auf 80 000 Mann erhöht. Still und leise, da das Bild der Normalisierung sonst verzerrt werden könnte. Die Aufstockung der Truppen, meint ein der Regierung nahestehender Beobachter, sei aber schon letztes Jahr erfolgt und diene nicht dem Kampf gegen den Terrorismus. Viel grösser sei in Moskau die Furcht vor den Landsknechten Kadyrows, die sich keiner Befehlsgewalt unterordnen. Reift im Zug der Normalisierung ein neuer Gegner heran?

«In Wirklichkeit sind wir vom Frieden weit entfernt, die Lage ist sehr instabil», meint der Chef eines Landkreises. Und ein Mitglied des Staatsrates fügt hinzu: «Maschadow war populär und der Einzige, mit dem wir Friedensverhandlungen hätten führen können.» Daher hätten ihn Kadyrow und seine Leute umgebracht. «Er wurde ausgeschaltet, damit sie ihre eigene Macht erhalten konnten.»

Ende Juli/Anfang August 2005 wird der Film am Festival von Brisbane gezeigt. Brisbane hat in den letzten Jahren durch sein engagiertes und eigenwilliges Programm einen wichtigen Platz in der Festival-Welt eingenommen.

Am 29. Mai findet im Arthouse Le Paris in Zürich um 12.15 Uhr die Schweizer Kinopremiere statt. Dazu wird auch Sainap Gaschaiewa erwartet, die nicht nach New York zum Tribeca Festival hatte reisen können, weil sie keinen Reisepass erhalten hatte. Der reguläre Scheizer Kinostart erfolgt am 2. Juni.

Born in exile in Kasakhstan, she became a business woman and reared four children. Zainap has been documenting what have become daily events since 1994: abduction, torture, murders. What has been declared an "anti-terrorist operation" by President Putin has taken on features of genocide. Up to thirty percent of the Chechen population may have been killed. The world is looking away; be it out of ignorance, helplessness or opportunism. Together with other women, Zainap has been hiding hundreds of videotapes. She is now bringing these tapes to Western Europe to serve as evidence so that the guilty - on whichever side - are punished. Is she tilting at windmills? "Coca" has been invited to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Tribeca Film Festival is one of the most important festivals of independant film in North America and we are delighted to be a part of it. "Coca" competes in the category 'Documentary Features'. The festival starts on the 21th of April and lasts until May 1st. Exact screening dates will be announced.
